KWAME NKRUMAH – THE VISION BEHIND THE NAME
- WHO WAS KWAME NKRUMAH?
- Kwame Nkrumah was born in 1909 in Nkroful, Gold Coast (now Ghana). A teacher, political thinker and nationalist leader, he led Ghana to independence from British rule in 1957, becoming its first Prime Minister and later President.
- HIS PAN-AFRICAN VISION
- Nkrumah believed Africa’s freedom was incomplete while any part of it remained under colonial rule. He championed African unity, self-determination and the liberation of African peoples. He organised the 5th Pan-African Congress in 1945 and hosted the All-African Peoples’ Conference in 1958.
- HIS CONTRIBUTION TO AFRICA
- Nkrumah used Ghana’s independence to support liberation movements and promote cooperation among African nations. He played a leading role in the formation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in 1963, dedicated to Africa’s unity and socio-economic progress.
- THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE NAME TO NBM OF AFRICA
- The name “Kwame Nkrumah” represents the Pan-African vision at the heart of NBM of Africa — African unity, self-determination, dignity, social justice and collective advancement.
- It reminds us of our responsibility to promote unity, defend human dignity and contribute to the advancement of Africa.
