- WHO WAS JAJA OF OPOBO?
King Jaja of Opobo, whose birth name was Jubo Jubogha, was born around 1821 in present-day Imo State. After being taken into the domestic slave system and later rising to prominence in Bonny, he became a powerful merchant and eventually founded the Opobo Kingdom in the Niger Delta. - HIS LEADERSHIP & ECONOMIC POWER
Jaja of Opobo built Opobo into an important centre of the palm-oil trade. He sought to control trade on his own terms and resisted attempts by European merchants to dominate the region’s commercial activities. - HIS RESISTANCE TO COLONIAL INTERFERENCE
As British influence expanded in the Niger Delta, tensions grew between Jaja and British authorities over trade and political control. In 1887, he was taken into British custody and exiled. He died in 1891 while attempting to return home. - THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE NAME TO NBM OF AFRICA
