BEYOND THE NAME – PUBLIC EDUCATION SERIES – EPISODE 40
OSEI KOFI TUTU – THE KING WHO BUILT UNITY
WHO WAS OSEI KOFI TUTU?
Osei Kofi Tutu I was the first Asantehene and one of the principal founders of the Asante state in present-day Ghana. In the late 17th and early 18th centuries, he brought together several Akan communities under a political union, transforming a collection of smaller states into a more organised and powerful kingdom.
HIS VISION FOR UNITY
Working closely with the spiritual leader Okomfo Anokye, Osei Tutu established Kumasi as the political centre of the emerging Asante Union. He also helped establish institutions and traditions that strengthened unity among the constituent states.
HIS CONTRIBUTION TO NATIONHOOD
One of the most enduring symbols associated with his reign is the Golden Stool (Sika Dwa Kofi). According to Asante tradition, the stool became the spiritual and political symbol of the Asante nation, representing the collective identity and authority of its people.
