JOE SLOVO – THE FIGHT FOR A DEMOCRATIC SOUTH AFRICA
WHO WAS JOE SLOVO?
Joe Slovo (1926–1995) was a South African politician, lawyer and prominent anti-apartheid activist. Born Yossel Mashel Slovo to a Jewish family in Lithuania, he immigrated to South Africa as a child and became deeply involved in the country’s political struggle against racial segregation.
HIS VISION FOR A FREE SOUTH AFRICA
Slovo was a leading member of the South African Communist Party (SACP) and became one of the senior figures in Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK), the armed wing established by the African National Congress (ANC) and its allies in 1961.
HIS CONTRIBUTION TO THE STRUGGLE
During years of exile and political struggle, he remained involved in efforts to dismantle apartheid and establish a democratic South Africa. He later participated in negotiations that contributed to South Africa’s transition from apartheid to democratic rule.
