GENERAL JOHNSON AGUIYI-IRONSI
WHO WAS GENERAL JOHNSON AGUIYI-IRONSI?
Major-General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi (3 March 1924 – 29 July 1966) was a Nigerian military officer who became Nigeria’s first military Head of State.
HIS VISION FOR NIGERIA
Born in Umuahia, he enlisted in the Nigerian Regiment in 1942 and rose through the military ranks. In 1963, he served as commander of the United Nations peacekeeping force in the Congo, before becoming General Officer Commanding the Nigerian Army in 1965.
HIS CONTRIBUTION TO NIGERIA
Following the military coup of 15 January 1966 and the ensuing political crisis, Aguiyi-Ironsi assumed national leadership on 16 January. His administration sought to restore order and strengthen national unity. However, his decision to establish a unitary system of government through Decree No. 34 in May 1966 generated considerable opposition.
On 29 July 1966, during a counter-coup, Aguiyi-Ironsi was killed while visiting Ibadan. His government lasted approximately six months.
